Ramnagar
Ramnagar is actually a city in itself which lies on the eastern banks of the Ganges, and is reachable by either boat or a bumpy rickshaw ride along a rudimentary bridge. The Maharajah of Kashi resides within the confines of the 17th Century Ramnagar Fort which also houses a must-visit museum showcasing palanquins, Rolls Royce cars and hunting equipment used by the erstwhile royal family. Do not be bewildered by the 'No Spitting' signs that abound here; this is just a gentle reminder to dissuade Indian tourists from staining the museum with highly corrosive and unhygienic red liquid remnants of paan (betel leaf). The resident Siva Temple and the Vyasa Temple are unassuming little structures which offer contemplative views of Ganga's western banks swathed in the golden rays of the setting sun. Just outside the complex is the Shiv Prasad Lassi Bhandar which locals herald as 'the best lassi in Varanasi!' A few kilometers further is the Durga Temple with its gorgeous ascending dome that towers into the sky. The nearby Akshir Sagar pond lends a distinctive atmospheric vibe to this desolate and sacred area which is best visited at sunset.
