There are varieties of sarees that are famous in Banaras such as Tanchoi, Vaskat, Cutwork, Jangla, Butidar, and Tishu. These sarees are made of silk fabric on a plain ground base with warp band weft and brocaded with different layouts and patterns such as buttas in ground border, bells, buties to give glamour like appearance. According to the past history, Banaras is a very popular place since the time of Regveda about 2000 years back. Since the period of Mahabharata and Ramayana, it was recognized as a identical reference and became famous for Banarasi Sarees. The fabrics woven here were called as Hiranya Vastra (Putamber Vastra) at that time. At the past time, city of Banaras is only popular for cotton saree weaving and dresses, but later on, it starts manufacturing the dress material with the silk fabric. Silk weaving started from the period of Mughals about 14 century. Banaras has the speciality of weaving silk sarees with brocades and using gold and silver threads in the weaving.
Brocade-
These are the type of textiles in which the different patterns are transfixed between the warp using threads. It is a pattern in which weft thread passed under the warp thread to make different types of patterns. When the brocade designs are made using silver, gold, cotton, and silk threads, then special kind of threads are used to transfixed under the warp using weft threads. These threads on warp passed through the heddles and it is used to separate the warp threads for the passage of weft to make different type of patterns for sarees. For this purpose, several heddles were arranged to make several patterns of woven sarees using brocades and other accessories. So several number of heddles were arranged with irregular number of thread to make patterns of sarees or other fabrics. Zari-brocades when used with silver and gold threads were make a pattern of different style on a warp creating a glittering type of fabric. Gold or silver threads are basically the silver threads that is polished with gold polish. These gold and silver threads are obtained by winding the silk thread with silver and gold wire around it. Sir Goeorge Watt said that when the base of fabric was hardly visible by using gold and silver thread so densly, then the material become Kinkhab and that material became heavy for the fabric. This material was then used for furnishing, hangings, and trappings etc. True brocade was only that in which the material has scattered pattern of Zari that material was used for clothing.
